When we recently expanded the range of the area for protected bilbies at Currawinya from 30 to over 300 square kilometres, it was a huge leap forward for the protection of the Greater Bilby.
But with over a ten-fold increase in our protection zone, there’s now an urgent need to take our bilby saving work to the next level.
Right now, bilby lovers like you have an important opportunity to help Save the Bilby Fund to ‘scale up’ and cover more ground — so bilbies can have their best shot at survival.
And when bilbies thrive, so do hundreds of other precious Australian native flora and fauna.
To scale up and cover more ground to protect our bilbies, we need crucial equipment. Not just any type of equipment — it needs to be specialised and fit for purpose so we can truly depend on it while we’re carrying out our bilby saving work in the field.
But our operating costs have risen 7.5% in the last year alone and we’re struggling to keep up. The sad reality is that, despite being remote, the Fund is not immune to economic pressures. Like the rest of Australia, inflation has hit us hard.
- A suitable work vehicle worth $95,000 – we’ve found a second-hand Landcruiser ute 79' Series, pre-fitted for remote terrain and working conditions. It’s exactly what we need but we don’t yet have the funds to buy it.
- A solar charging station worth $70,000 – to power our electric, all-terrain vehicle and agriculture bike and allow us to look to the future, where I hope to be able to expand to a larger fleet of sustainable electric powered vehicles — to harness the power of the sun out here and provide a much, much quieter alternative to noisy diesel powered vehicles. We believe having quiet vehicles will be an absolute game changer for monitoring and managing our big-eared bilbies!
We’re a small but savvy team and we know what we need to do next in the fight to save the bilby. But we can’t do it without you.
Please donate to help our native treasure survive and thrive once again — before it’s too late. Our Aussie battlers depend on it!
About Save The Bilby Fund
Save the Bilby Fund is a national charity who has been fighting to save the bilby from the threat of extinction for more than 20 years.
Australia has already lost 34 species forever — the worst mammal extinction record of any developed nation on Earth — and hundreds more are being pushed further to the brink each day. We cannot let the bilby join this list.
We are more focused than ever on making sure that the bilbies remain a crucial part of Australia's arid landscape for our future generations to enjoy, with the aim of building an insurance population of 10,000 bilbies in Australia by 2030.
