Please Donate to Save the Bilby Fund

Please give your bilby saving gift now so we can buy the specialised equipment we need and put more people on the ground.

This is the lesser bilby and its former range. (You could call it the bilby ghost of Christmas past?). They went extinct in the 1960s, with cats and foxes being the main culprits.

Feral cats are currently closing in on our bilbies living freely outside the fence.

We can’t bear to think what might happen if we don’t get a handle on these predators before it’s too late.

But the job of managing predators around the sanctuary fence is about to get a whole lot bigger. We’re increasing the range of the protected area at Currawinya from 30 to 300 square kilometres.

Our kind and generous supporter helped us by matching donations until we reached our goal of $142,000 - this was to cover the cost of 4 felixer cameras for 30 months at a cost of $110,000 plus we budgeted $32,000 for an electric ATV.

If you’ve already made your special gift this Christmas, We are grateful. It means the world to have people like you who care just as much as we do about saving our bilbies.

If you are still yet to give, we still could really use your support. We did not budget for some of the extras for the ATV, such as a trailer and a powerful enough off grid solar rig for charging. And we need to get it to Currawinya! Not an easy task either.

It’s not too late. Please make your urgent gift now.

We’ve come a long way, but so much more still needs to be done to give bilbies a fighting chance against predators.

The Christmas bilby of the future is in our hands.

Your gift will give the bilby the best possible hope of surviving and thriving well into the future.

We mean it when we say we couldn’t do the work we do without you. Thank you for your support!

We hope you had a merry Christmas and all the best for the new year.

There’s a pressing issue that I simply cannot ignore.

It’s something that risks seriously jeopardising the work we have done to date: the threat of feral cats.

I urge you to donate now so that we can get on top of this terrible threat to our natives throughout Currawinya as soon as possible.

We are already seeing an increasing number of cat tracks around the fence. For the protection of our bilbies, we must manage this current explosion of feral cats at Currawinya National Park.

At the current perimeter outside the fence that we are allowed to patrol, our tiny team is just managing to keep the cats at bay.

But when our protected area expands to ten times the current size, we’re going to need all the help we can get to continue keeping bilbies safe from predators.
If you’ve already sent your Christmas gift, thank you!

If you haven’t yet donated, please act now. Your funds will go straight towards the payment we urgently need to make so that we can acquire four new Felixers as well as other bilby saving equipment.

Why are these Felixers so effective?

Felixers are automated – As you can imagine, nimble feral cats are incredibly hard to catch. But these traps are movement triggered and operated by AI cameras. When the targeted predator approaches, the devices spray poison. Felixers can even tell the difference between a cat and a native animal (like a bilby).

Felixers are safe for the environment - Built by conservationists, they use sodium fluoroacetate, better known as 1080. It’s a naturally occurring toxin found in more than 30 species of native Australian plants. It is safe in the environment as it dilutes into harmless compounds in water and gets absorbed by the bacteria in soil.

Felixers are no threat to native wildlife, like our precious bilbies - Many of Australia’s native wildlife have a natural tolerance to 1080, unlike introduced invasive species, like feral cats and foxes. So even if a native animal gets exposed to the sprayed substance, they’ll be ok!

Felixers are humane - Knowing other animals won’t be harmed by 1080 poison allows the dose administered by the Felixer to be set to a higher level, which means a quicker, more humane death for the targeted predator.

But here’s the catch... Felixers are exorbitantly expensive to use—in fact, you can't even buy them. We’ll need to rent four more of the devices for 30 months and it’ll cost $107,000.

And even after we can acquire the additional Felixers, we’ll need to have staff and trained volunteers ready to monitor and manage the traps after they are placed.

We have made so much incredible progress, thanks to the generosity of our bilby loving community who have been able to finance each small step we take.

With big things coming up, we need to move urgently to save bilby lives.

With my best wishes,
